fly over states

There are few songs out there that resonate deeply with me.
The ones that do depict a life of travel, being away from loved ones or the wide open road.
Most recently, Jason Aldean's song Fly Over States has struck a chord with me.
I constantly hear people complain about how boring a city, or even worse, an entire state is.
How shallow and naive of them.
While griping, they tend to mention states like Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa and more.
I couldn't disagree with these complaints more!
Every state in this country is just beautiful to drive through.
Every state.
When up in a plane, you look out your window, see plots of land and think how boring.
But seeing these small towns, America's heartland, from the ground is eye opening, life changing and just plain magnificent.
Writing off an entire state for having corn fields, mom/pop diners and farmers plowing on the side of the highway is a poor reflection of you, not the state itself.
This is America.

Please take time to read this recount of a small town that I drove through last summer.

  1. I'm from Kentucky! People tend to think the whole state is full of farms and fields, while that is true for some of it. However, the whole state isn't like that at all. It makes me sad if I was to hear people think of Kentucky that way.

I just think people that say things about "fly over states" are ignorant and close-minded. You are TOTALLY right. EVERY state has something to offer.

  3. It's funny that you mentioned this because I completely agree! This song has actually inspired me to want to do a cross county trip because I've realized that there is so much of our amazing country that I've never seen. It's places like Kansas, Alabama, Oklahoma that I actually DO want to see. I'm from CT, but my boyfriend is from Kentucky and I think its one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. I think I could even imagine myself living there one day :)

  4. This is one of my favorite songs ever! It could not be more true. I am from a "little town with a funny name" in the MS Delta. There is no place on earth more beautiful.

  6. THANK YOU for this post! I'm from Oklahoma and it gets pretty exhausting listening to everyone bash it. Being from one of those "fly over states" is wonderful and I love living here. It's so refreshing to come across people who appreciate variety and who don't judge a book by its cover. We may not have the best city living but we do have some of the best living, in my opinion. I love your blog!

  8. I love that song too! I went to Iowa for Thanksgiving last year and I loved it. You are so right. Nothing is better than exploring a new place, no matter how big or small. However, no one will catch me looking out my airplane window at any states-makes me feel sick! :/

  13. I too, LOVE this song! I grew up in a small town, and then lived in Raleigh and Charlotte. Lately, I am dying for us to find an old house that needs some love in a tiny town that's just slow and quiet. I totally agree!

  14. I have to agree with this post, I grew up in Minnesota and move to San Diego for college... needless to say, I got a lot of "I don't even know where that is" and "what can you even do there" questions all the time. People are super naive to how great the midwest is!

    I crank this song, I love it {and him}
